The Crown Check-In
Is Your Hair Routine Actually Working?
You made it through the back-to-school rush.
The schedules are settling.
The protective styles are in—or coming down.
The alarms are definitely still disrespectful. 😭😂
And before we rush into another month, another hairstyle, or another product…
It’s time for something Greaux Girls sometimes forget to do:
Check in with the crown.
Not the internet.
Not the latest trend.
Not somebody else’s wash day.
Your hair.
Because a healthy hair routine isn’t something you create once and follow forever without thinking.
Your hair changes.
Your lifestyle changes.
The seasons change.
And sometimes the routine that worked beautifully a few months ago needs a small adjustment.
That doesn’t mean you failed.
It means you’re paying attention.
So this week, we’re asking one simple question:
Is your routine actually working for you?
🔬 Education
Healthy Hair Progress Is More Than Length
One of the easiest mistakes to make is judging an entire hair routine by one thing:
“How many inches did I grow?”
Growth matters.
But it isn’t the only measure of healthy-hair progress.
Remember:
Hair grows from the follicle.
But whether you keep that length depends heavily on how well you care for the strands afterward.
That means progress can show up in several ways.
Signs Your Routine May Be Working
✔ Your scalp feels comfortable between wash days.
✔ Your hair is easier to detangle.
✔ You notice less unnecessary breakage.
✔ Your ends feel stronger or appear healthier.
✔ Your hair stays moisturized longer.
✔ Your protective styles are creating less tension.
✔ You’re seeing better length retention over time.
✔ You understand your hair better than you did before.
That last one matters.
Because learning your crown is progress too.
Ask Yourself These 5 Questions
1. How Does My Scalp Feel?
Healthy scalp care starts with awareness.
Ask:
Is my scalp regularly itchy?
Is there excessive buildup?
Does it feel tight or tender?
Am I seeing unusual flaking?
Does my scalp generally feel comfortable after cleansing?
A scalp that constantly feels irritated may need more than another layer of oil.
Sometimes the routine itself needs adjusting.
2. How Does My Hair Feel?
Touch your hair.
Seriously.
Your hands can tell you a lot.
Does it feel:
Soft?
Flexible?
Rough?
Brittle?
Coated?
Dry even after adding products?
Hair that constantly feels weighed down may be experiencing product buildup.
Hair that repeatedly feels dry may need adjustments in cleansing, conditioning, hydration, or styling practices.
The goal is not to chase a perfectly soft texture every second of the day.
The goal is to recognize your normal.
3. What Are My Ends Telling Me?
Your ends are the oldest part of your hair.
And they often tell the story before the rest of the strand does.
Pay attention to:
• Split ends
• Single-strand knots
• Roughness
• Excessive tangling
• Transparent or thinning ends
• Frequent snapping
Healthy length retention requires protecting the hair you already grew.
That means sometimes progress looks less like gaining another inch and more like keeping the inches you already earned.
4. Am I Seeing Shedding—or Breakage?
We’ve talked about this one throughout the Greaux Girl™ series because it’s important.
SHEDDING
Generally involves a full-length strand being released naturally from the follicle.
BREAKAGE
Occurs when the strand snaps somewhere along the hair shaft.
A few broken hairs are not necessarily cause for panic.
Hair experiences wear.
But if you’re consistently seeing lots of short broken pieces, it may be time to examine:
✔ Detangling technique
✔ Heat use
✔ Tension
✔ Moisture practices
✔ Protective styling
✔ Condition of your ends
Patterns matter more than one wash day.
5. Can I Actually Maintain This Routine?
This might be the most important question of all.
A routine can look perfect on paper and still be wrong for your life.
If your healthy-hair routine requires:
Four hours every night…
Seventeen products…
Three separate wash days…
and the patience of a saint… 😭
You probably aren’t going to maintain it.
And that matters.
A realistic routine performed consistently usually makes more sense than an elaborate routine performed once every six weeks.
Ask:
What can I actually keep doing?
That’s where your sustainable routine begins.
🌿 Botanical Spotlight
Calendula
Calendula is easily recognized by its beautiful golden-orange flowers.
Traditionally used in botanical skin and hair preparations, calendula contains naturally occurring plant compounds and has long been valued in gentle herbal-care formulations.
You may find calendula incorporated into:
🌼 Botanical oils
🌼 Scalp preparations
🌼 Herbal rinses
🌼 Conditioners
🌼 Skin and hair-care products
And as we’ve learned all summer:
Botanicals can complement a healthy routine.
But the foundation remains the same:
Cleanse appropriately.
Condition intentionally.
Protect the strands.
Pay attention to the scalp.
The ingredient supports the practice.
⭐ Crown Review
“The biggest change in my hair journey happened when I stopped asking what everybody else was doing and started paying attention to my own hair. Once I learned what dryness, buildup, breakage, and healthy moisture felt like for me, choosing products and building my routine became so much easier.”
— Greaux Girl™ Reader, Angela, B.
💡 Crown Tip
Take a Monthly Crown Inventory
At the end of every month, spend ten minutes evaluating your routine.
You can even keep a simple note on your phone.
Ask:
SCALP:
How has my scalp felt this month?
MOISTURE:
Has my hair stayed moisturized comfortably?
BREAKAGE:
Have I noticed more or less?
ENDS:
How do they look and feel?
STYLING:
Have my styles been gentle or stressful?
CONSISTENCY:
Did I actually follow my routine?
CHANGES:
What ONE thing—if anything—should I adjust next month?
Notice that last question.
One thing.
You don’t have to throw the entire routine away because one area needs improvement.
Small adjustments are often enough.
📚 Did You Know?
More Products Can Sometimes Make It Harder to Understand Your Hair
When you introduce several new products at the same time, it becomes difficult to know which one changed your results.
If something works?
You don’t know why.
If something doesn’t?
You still don’t know why. 😭
When possible, make intentional changes and observe how your hair responds.
That gives you useful information.
And useful information helps you build a better routine.
Your crown is giving you feedback.
The goal is learning how to read it.
💬 Quote of the Week
“Healthy hair care gets easier when you stop chasing routines and start learning your crown.”
🤎 Commit to Your Crown™
This week, don’t add anything.
Pause.
Look at your hair.
Touch it.
Check your scalp.
Look at your ends.
Think about your last several wash days.
Ask yourself:
What’s working?
What feels easier?
What keeps giving me trouble?
What am I doing consistently?
And what am I doing simply because someone online told me I should?
Then make one intentional adjustment if you need one.
Because the goal of hair education isn’t to make your routine more complicated.
It’s to help you make better decisions.
All month we’ve learned how to:
Choose protective styles wisely.
Build realistic healthy habits.
Care for hair while it’s tucked away.
Remove protective styles gently.
And now—evaluate the results.
That’s Back-to-School Crown Care.
Not perfection.
Not trends.
Not twenty products.
Just a woman learning how to care for her crown with knowledge, patience, and intention.
CHECK IN.
LEARN.
ADJUST.
STAY CONSISTENT.
And keep going.
Because healthy hair isn’t a destination.
It’s a relationship you keep learning.
